How to tie dye something

  • Before you dye your item, you should wash it to remove anything that may have gotten on the fabric. Before doing the tie dye you need it to be clean.

  • Remember to cover your work area. You do now want your house interior to get stained by the dye.

  • Decide what kind of design you want your finished tie dye product to have. Usually stripes or something that gives a sense of direction in the tie dye design works well. Also spirals are fancy, and fairly easy to do.

  • Lay the t-shirt or other item of your choice out as flat as you can, then fold and tie as you wish.

  • Prepare your dye as directed by the manufacturer. All instructions coming with the dye should be carefully read and followed. Wear rubber gloves while preparing the dye and dyeing. Gloves protect your hands from staining (and the hot water).

  • Pre-treat your item if necessary. With some dyes you will have to soak it in soda ash and with others, you simply need to dip it in hot water.

  • Start dyeing! If you are using more than one colour, usually you will get the best results starting with the lightest colour. Rinse or wait between colours (read instructions that came with the dye). Some dyes require you to rinse immediately and others require you to let the item sit for at least 24 hours.

  • After completing the dyeing, clean all containers with hot water and soap. This way dye will not be left in the container to obscure your next tie dye project.

  • Be careful when you wash your tie-dyed garments for the first few times! They almost certainly will bleed, so wash them with like colors. Using cold water the first times might preserve the colours better.
